Raymond Sowemimo, Nigerian-born community leader bags Outstanding Texan Award

Dr. Raymond Sowemimo, Nigerian-born community leader and Houston resident has been awarded the Outstanding Texan Award at the 2017 African American Legislative Summit hosted by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus. Other recipients of this category were Jesse Lot, a Houston’s Fifth Ward long time community business leader and resident; and Mary Ellen Hicks, a retired Senior Appellate Court Judge and a former Justice on the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth Texas.

Dr. Sowemimo, Chairman and long-time member of the Nigerian Foundation is also the founder and President of Avalon Medical Career Academy – an institution accredited for helping hundreds of Houston residents to accomplish their careers in various healthcare fields. “It’s all about building the community, but I am glad and encouraged that our efforts as community leaders and advocates are being recognized and rewarded at the state level,” Dr. Sowemimo told International Guardian.     

African-American legislative Summit held from February 26 – February 28, at the Hilton Austin Downtown,   comprised of Chair’s Award Gala; TLBC Scholarship Banquet with Keynote Speaker Dr. Ruth Simmons (Former President of Smith College and Brown University); and Community Awards Breakfast.

The Texas Legislative Black Caucus was formed in 1973 and composed of 17 members of the Texas House of Representatives committed to addressing the issues African Americans face across the state of Texas.
